Community Economic Empowerment and Legal Support (CEELS) is an NGO which was incepted in year 2010 and was registered in the same year through NGO Act, 2002. Originally CEELS acquired registration number 00NGO/00003988 on 26th July, 2010 followed by registration number 00NGO/0008812 on 3rd November, 2016. CEELS has complied as per improved NGO policy 2019 and NGO Act, 2022 with its subsequent amendments thus CEELS acquired newer registration number 00NGO/R1/00355 on 27th December, 2023 as issued by the registrar of NGOs.
CEELS, in partnership with The Nature Conservancy’s Lake Tanganyika Program, is set to implement a fisheries co-management and freshwater biodiversity protection initiative in four villages within the Kala ward of the Nkasi District Council: Mpasa, Tundu, Kala, and Kilambo cha Mkolechi. This project aims to empower local communities and stakeholders to effectively manage, protect, and conserve fisheries resources in accordance with the Fisheries Act.
To achieve these objectives, establishment and operationalization of Co-Management Institutions, commonly referred to as Beach Management Units (BMUs) and Collaborative Fisheries Management Associations (CFMA) will be undertaken. These community-led organizations will unite all stakeholders within the fisheries value chain, including fishers, boat owners, boat builders, processors, and consumers, to collaboratively develop and agree upon best management practices that ensure the sustainability of fisheries resources.
