Kilombero Sugar Company Limited (KSCL) is the largest sugar producer in Tanzania and a significant contributor to the nation’s economy and its goal of sugar self-sufficiency. The company is primarily owned by Illovo Sugar Africa (75% shareholding), which is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Londo listed Associated British Foods plc (ABF), with the remaining 25% held by the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania. Located in the Morogoro region, KSCL operates two adjacent agricultural estates and sugar factories, Msolwa and Ruembe, linked by a low level bridge across the Great Ruaha River. The company has the largest sugarcane crop estate in Tanzania, covering 26,000 hectares. Approximately 55% of the sugarcane is grown on the company’s own land, while the remaining 45% is sourced from a network of around 8,000 smallholder farmers (Kilombero Growers), who benefit from the company’s technical support and training. KSCL’s main product is direct consumption brown sugar sold under the well known “Bwana Sukari” brand name, available in various pack sizes from 150g to 50kg to serve diverse consumer needs. The company also operates a state of-the-art distillery that supplies high-quality alcohol to the local beverage industry.
