Action For Ocean (AFO), formerly known as the Aqua Farms Organization, is a youth-led Tanzanian non profit founded in 2016. Dedicated to the protection of marine ecosystems and the strengthening of coastal community resilience, AFO operates along Tanzania’s 1,424-kilometer coastline, where it blends scientific research with indigenous knowledge to address critical challenges such as overfishing, habitat degradation, and climate change. The organization’s mission centers on replenishing aquatic resources through community-based conservation and sustainable aquaculture. AFO has successfully restored over 70 hectares of marine habitat, including replanting more than 40,000 mangroves. One of its standout initiatives, the Matumbawe Hai model, focuses on coral reef restoration while providing local fishers with diving skills and alternative income. Another flagship program, the Africa Fair Seaweed Finance Facility (AFSFF), empowers coastal women—who make up 80% of the seaweed farming sector in Tanzania—by providing financial literacy, quality inputs, and market access. This shift to “incentivized conservation” helps families double their monthly incomes while reducing dependency on extractive fishing.
