The Tanzania Agricultural Development Bank (TADB) is a state-owned development finance institution (DFI) established in 2015 to catalyze the transformation of Tanzania’s agricultural sector. Often referred to as the “Farmers’ Bank,” its primary mission is to shift the country from subsistence farming to a modern, commercialized, and sustainable model that ensures food security and poverty reduction. As of 2025, TADB has marked a decade of significant growth, with its balance sheet tripling over the last four years to reach TZS 1.13 trillion by June 2025. This rapid expansion elevated the bank from a Tier 3 to a Tier 1 bank, enabling it to support over 1.95 million smallholder farmers and more than 700 agribusinesses across 168 districts. TADB operates through an integrated value chain financing model that supports 57 distinct agricultural value chains. A cornerstone of its strategy is the Smallholder Farmers Credit Guarantee Scheme (SCGS). Launched in 2018, this scheme manages government-backed guarantees that cover up to 50% of the risk for partner financial institutions (PFIs). This mechanism has unlocked credit for over 762,000 farmers who were previously excluded from formal banking, expanding the number of participating banks from 2 to 19.
