Amref Health Africa in Tanzania is a prominent non governmental organization dedicated to creating lasting health change and improving access to equitable health services across the country. Established in 1987 as a country office of the larger, Africa-wide Amref Health Africa (originally the “Flying Doctors Service of East Africa” in 1957), the Tanzanian entity is now a locally led organization with its own governance structure. For over 35 years, Amref Tanzania has been a key partner to the government, collaborating with the Ministry of Health and other key ministries to support the development of national health policies, strategies, and guidelines. The organization’s mission is to transform the health of communities by investing in the health and lives of women and young people, focusing on reducing preventable maternal, newborn, and child mortality. Amref Tanzania’s work is guided by its 2023-2030 strategic plan, which is committed to achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and addressing social determinants of health. Amref Tanzania’s approach emphasizes community-led, people centered health systems, innovation, and data-driven solutions, all aimed at delivering quality, sustainable healthcare services to the most vulnerable populations.
