Established in 1994 following the dissolution of the Tanzania Posts and Telecommunications Corporation, it transitioned from a partially privatized entity back to 100% government ownership in 2016. Today, it operates as a state-owned corporation under the TTCL Act of 2017, tasked with managing strategic telecommunications assets, including the National ICT Broadband Backbone (NICTBB) and a national Data Center. In 2026, TTCL is spearheading a massive infrastructure expansion to bridge the digital divide. The corporation is currently executing a two-phase project to build 1,400 communication towers aimed at extending high-speed internet to underserved rural areas. By June 2026, the first phase is expected to be complete, with 626 towers fully operational and directly linked to the national backbone.
