Located in the northeastern corner of Tanzania along the Indian Ocean coast, the Tanga City Council serves as the administrative heart of one of the nation’s most historic port cities. As the capital of the Tanga Region, the council manages a population of approximately 393,429 residents according to the 2022 census. The council’s jurisdiction is strategically divided into four divisions and 27 administrative wards, balancing a mix of 18 urban wards and nine peri-urban areas like Chongoleani and Tongoni. The council operates under a clear mandate to transform Tanga into a world-class city by 2025. This Strategic Plan prioritizes effective service delivery, public engagement, and the enhancement of social determinants of health. Led by key officials such as the Lord Mayor and the City Director, the council focuses on diverse sectors including civil engineering, public sector governance, and the provision of social services like education and healthcare. Economic development remains a central pillar of the council’s activities. By leveraging the historic Port of Tanga, the council facilitates the export of vital goods such as sisal, coffee, tea, and cotton.
