Established in 1989, the Women’s Legal Aid Centre (WLAC) is a leading non-profit, non-governmenta organization in Tanzania dedicated to championing the rights of women and children. Originally emerging from the legal aid scheme of SUWATA, the organization has evolved into a pivotal legal advocate, addressing systemic gender-based discrimination and violence. Its primary mission is to empower vulnerable groups by providing essential legal services, fostering human rights awareness, and lobbying for the reform of discriminatory laws and cultural practices. The center operates through a multifaceted approach, focusing on four core areas: legal aid, advocacy and networking, paralegal training, and outreach. WLAC provides direct legal assistance in civil and criminal cases, including matters of divorce, child maintenance, and inheritance. To broaden its impact, the organization has facilitated the establishment of paralegal units across various regions, such as Arusha, Kigoma, and Mbeya, ensuring that even rural populations have a path to justice. This grassroots presence is bolstered by community sensitization campaigns and media engagement intended to shift social norms that devalue women and girls.
