The Aga Khan Foundation (AKF) Tanzania is a non-profit international development agency that has been working to improve the quality of life for marginalized communities in the country since 1989. Operating as an agency of the Aga Khan Development Network, AKF addresses the root causes of poverty through long-term, community-based solutions. The foundation focuses its interventions primarily on rural and underserved areas, particularly in the Southern Highlands, Lindi, Mtwara, and Zanzibar. The foundation’s programming spans several critical sectors, including education, health, economic inclusion, and food security. In education, AKF strengthens early childhood development and primary education by training teachers and improving school environments. Its health initiatives focus on enhancing maternal and child health services, strengthening local health systems, and improving nutrition. Through agricultural and economic programs, AKF empowers smallholder farmers—especially women by introducing climate-smart farming techniques, improving market access, and establishing community-led savings groups.By collaborating closely with the Government of Tanzania, local civil society organizations, and private partners, AKF ensures its projects are sustainable and locally owned. Through this holistic and multi sectoral approach, the foundation continues to foster resilient, self reliant communities capable of driving their own social and economic progress.
