The British High Commission Tanzania Dar es Salaam serves as the official diplomatic mission representing the United Kingdom’s government interests in the United Republic of Tanzania. Because both nations are members of the Commonwealth, they exchange High Commissions rather than traditional embassies. Established in 1964 following the historic union of Tanganyika and Zanzibar, this mission plays a vital role in nurturing the long-standing political, economic, and cultural relationships between the two countries. The mission operates out of Umoja House, a modern seven-story office building situated on Hamburg Avenue within the Ilala District of Dar es Salaam. Designed by British architect Michael Manser and completed in 2002, the facility is shared with the embassies of Germany and the Netherlands. Led by High Commissioner Marianne Young, the High Commission also acts as the United Kingdom’s representative to the East African Community.
A central function of the High Commission involves managing extensive international development partnerships through the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO). These initiatives focus heavily on sustainable growth, poverty reduction, clean energy, and healthcare. Additionally, the office facilitates crucial consular assistance for British citizens living in or traveling through Tanzania, handling emergency travel documentation and notarial services exclusively by appointment.
