The Cereals and Other Produce Board of Tanzania (CPB) is a strategic government commercial entity established under the Cereals and Other Produce Act No. 19 of 2009. Unlike regulatory bodies, the CPB operates as a commercial agency mandated to enhance the competitiveness and development of the cereals industry in mainland Tanzania. It was created to fill a critical vacuum following the liberalization of the agricultural sector, which had previously left smallholder farmers vulnerable to price fluctuations and private monopolies. The board’s core operations focus on value addition and market stabilization. It actively purchases and sells a wide range of “edible grains” including maize, rice, wheat, beans, and sorghum ensuring farmers have a reliable market at competitive prices. Beyond simple trading, the CPB invests heavily in agro-processing; for example, it recently established a modern sunflower oil processing plant in Dodoma with a daily capacity of 40 tonnes to reduce national dependency on imported edible oils. Furthermore, the board provides essential post-harvest services such as warehousing, cleaning, drying, and grading to meet both national and international quality standards. By maintaining regional branches and sales centers in cities like Dodoma, Arusha, and Mwanza, the CPB ensures that high quality processed products reach consumers efficiently.
