The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) was established in accordance with Article 112 (1) of the Constitution of the United Republic of Tanzania of 1977 read together with the Judicial Management Act, Chapter 237. Before the enactment of the Judicial Service Act No. 2 of 2005, and now the Judicial Management Act, Chapter 237, there were two Commissions that dealt with judicial personnel, namely the Judicial Service Commission that dealt with Resident Magistrates and District Magistrates and the Special Judicial Service Commission that dealt with Magistrates of Primary Courts. Currently, matters of employment and discipline of Judicial Officers are handled by the Judicial Service Commission. The members and responsibilities of the Commission are stipulated in the Constitution of the United Republic of Tanzania and the Judicial Administration Act, Chapter 237. In carrying out its role of overseeing the ethics of Judicial Officers, the Commission has delegated its powers to Ethics Committees at various levels. These committees are tasked with investigating and investigating complaints against Judges, Magistrates, and Non Judicial Officers and submitting reports to the Commission for decision. The vision of the organization is to be a center of excellence in managing the Judicial Service in mainland Tanzania.
