The LEAD Foundation (Leadership, Environmental Conservation & Action for Development) is a prominent Tanzanian non-governmental organization (NGO) dedicated to restoring degraded semi-arid landscapes using nature-based solutions. Founded in 2011, the foundation has grown into a leader in environmental conservation, with offices in Mpwapwa, Dodoma, Singida, and Arusha. The core of LEAD Foundation’s work involves implementing cost effective and sustainable techniques, most notably Farmer Managed Natural Regeneration (FMNR), locally known as Kisiki Hai, and rainwater harvesting. Our flagship program, Kisiki Hai (Farmer Managed Natural Regeneration – FMNR), has restored more than 23 million native trees and engaged over 260,000 households in over 635 villages across Central and Northern Tanzania. We also implement Rainwater Harvesting techniques like Half-Moon Bunds (Earth Smiles) and Fanya Juu/Chini Terraces to improve soil moisture and food security. Through these methods, often in partnership with international organizations like Justdiggit, the LEAD Foundation has achieved significant results, including the restoration of over 14 million trees and involving thousands of households across multiple regions. The foundation’s initiatives not only combat climate change and desertification but also improve local livelihoods, food security, and biodiversity, demonstrating how community-led restoration can transform environments from barren to thriving ecosystems.
