Mkwawa Leaf Tobacco Limited (MLTL) is a prominent Tanzanian agribusiness firm headquartered in Morogoro, specializing in the sustainable cultivation, processing, and export of premium leaf tobacco. Established with a vision to modernize Tanzania’s tobacco sector, the company has rapidly scaled its operations, expanding its workforce to over 3,700 employees and contracting tens of thousands of local growers across the country. Under the leadership of CEO Ahmed Huwel, MLTL acquired assets previously held by the Tanzania Leaf Tobacco Company, signaling a major reinvestment in the nation’s agricultural infrastructure. The company’s operations are defined l by a “farmer-centric” approach that has transformed the local economy. By introducing competitive pricing and faster payment systems—often within 48 hours of sale—MLTL has helped increase the number of tobacco growers in Tanzania from roughly 11,000 to over 80,000. Its processing facility in Morogoro is a state of-the-art hub capable of handling up to 90 million kilograms of tobacco annually, with future plans to reach a capacity of 160 million kilograms by 2026. These facilities produce diverse leaf types, including Flue-cured, Sun-cured, and Burley, which are exported to international partners from the port of Dar es Salaam. Sustainability and community empowerment are core pillars of the Mkwawa mission.
