Mwananyamala Regional Referral Hospital (MRRH), located in the Kinondoni Municipal Council of Dar es Salaam, is a critical public health institution serving a population of over 2.2 million people. Established in July 1973 as a modest Mother and Child Health (MCH) clinic, the facility has undergone significant transformations. It was upgraded to a District Hospital in 1983 and officially became a Regional Referral Hospital in October 2010 following a government gazette. Today, the hospital acts as a primary referral point for more than 200 public and private health facilities across the Kinondoni and Ubungo districts. It operates with a capacity of approximately 254 beds, though it frequently experiences high demand with occupancy rates exceeding 130%. On average, the facility attends to between 1,500 and 1,800 patients daily, offering a wide range of services including specialized clinical care, emergency medicine, surgery, and maternal health. The hospital comprises 12 specialized wards, such as Neonatal, Pediatrics, and Intensive Care units, and provides comprehensive laboratory services including microbiology and clinical chemistry. Managed by the Ministry of Health, MRRH also functions as a center for research and training.
