The Tanzania-Zambia Railway Authority, commonly known as TAZARA, is a bi-national railway that serves as a critical link between the Southern African regional transport network and the East African seaport of Dar es Salaam. Stretching approximately 1,860 kilometers from the port of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania to New Kapiri Mposhi in Zambia, it provides a vital communication backbone for regional trade and passenger movement. Often called the “Great Uhuru Railway,” it symbolizes a monumental engineering feat and a landmark of international cooperation. The history of TAZARA is deeply rooted in the liberation struggles of Southern Africa. After Western nations and the World Bank rejected the project as economically unviable, the governments of Tanzania and Zambia approached the People’s Republic of China. Under the leadership of Chairman Mao Tse Tung, China agreed to finance and build the line as a turnkey project, providing the necessary expertise, equipment, and labor. Constructed between 1970 and 1975, the project involved moving nearly 89 million cubic meters of earth and rock and building 320 bridges and 22 tunnels. Today, TAZARA continues to play a vital role in the economies of both nations by transporting bulky cargo like copper, fuel, and agricultural products.
