The High Commission of India in Tanzania, established in Dar es Salaam in November 1961, is the primary diplomatic mission responsible for fostering and enhancing the traditionally close and friendly bilateral relations between India and Tanzania. These relations, which were elevated to a Strategic Partnership in October 2023, are rooted in shared commitments to anti-colonialism, South-South cooperation, and non-alignment policies of the past. Today, the High Commission, along with its Consulate General in Zanzibar, manages a modern and pragmatic partnership that spans diversified economic engagement, development cooperation, defence and security, and extensive people-to-people contacts. Functionally, the High Commission serves as the nexus for diplomatic and consular activities, providing essential services to a large Indian diaspora and expatriate community in Tanzania, as well as to Tanzanian nationals. Key services include the issuance and renewal of passports, processing visa applications, providing emergency assistance during crises such as medical emergencies or natural disasters, and offering notarial services. Beyond these consular functions, the mission actively promotes trade and investment, with India being Tanzania’s second-largest trading partner. It facilitates numerous trade events and business networking meets to bolster economic ties.
