The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) is a not-for-profit institution that generates agricultural innovations to meet Africa’s most pressing challenges of hunger, malnutrition, poverty, and natural resource degradation. Working with various partners across sub-Saharan Africa, we improve livelihoods, enhance food and nutrition security, increase employment, and preserve natural resource integrity. It is the headquarters for IITA operations in Eastern Africa, a region that includes six countries. IITA is a member of CGIAR, a global agriculture research partnership for a food secure future. It works closely with the Tanzanian Ministry of Agriculture and the Tanzania Agricultural Research Institute (TARI) to strengthen national agricultural development and ensure the successful commercialization of crops like cassava. The institute conducts research to develop resilient crop varieties resistant to diseases like Cassava Brown Streak Disease (CBSD) and Cassava Mosaic Disease (CMD), and black Sigatoka disease in bananas. IITA engages in capacity building and knowledge dissemination, training farmers, policymakers, and government agricultural staff on best practices and improved agricultural technologies. Active projects include the African Cassava Agronomy Initiative (ACAI) and Aflasafe Technical Transfer and Commercialization (ATTC). Â
