The Kilombero Valley Teak Company (KVTC), established in 1992, is one of Africa’s most innovative and largest private forest management projects. Located in the remote Kilombero and Ulanga Districts of Tanzania’s Morogoro Region, the company manages approximately 28,000 hectares of land. Its core operations involve the sustainable planting and harvesting of 8,000 hectares of teak, while simultaneously protecting over 20,000 hectares of native forests, wetlands, and diverse wildlife. KVTC operates an integrated processing plant at Mavimba, which is considered one of the most modern facilities of its kind in the region. This factory transforms raw logs into high-value teak products, including air-dried and kiln-dried lumber, flooring, and decking for both domestic and export markets. The project is backed by socially and environmentally responsible investors, including the Africa Sustainable Forestry Fund and the Finnish Fund for Industrial Cooperation (Finnfund). Beyond its industrial output, KVTC is a major driver of socio-economic development in the Kilombero Valley. It employs roughly 250 permanent staff and hundreds of local contractors, providing vital income in an economically marginalized area.
