Railway Children Africa (RCA Tanzania) is a prominent non governmental organization registered in Tanzania that focuses on protecting children who live or work on the streets. Since establishing a presence in 2006, the organization has dedicated itself to reaching vulnerable youth before they become entrenched in street life, often acting as a first point of contact for those escaping abuse, neglect, or extreme poverty. The organization operates through a multi-faceted approach that includes street outreach, family intervention, and safeguarding services. A critical component of their strategy is the “reach, rescue, and reintegrate” model, which seeks to reunify children with their families whenever safe and possible. To support this, RCA has collaborated with the Tanzanian Government to establish Social Welfare Service Desks at major bus terminals in key regions, providing a vital lifeline for children arriving in cities who are at high risk of exploitation. Beyond direct intervention, Railway Children Africa plays a significant role in strengthening national child protection systems. They work closely with policymakers to improve national guidelines and train social workers in specialized care, such as foster care and Video Interactive Guidance (VIG) to repair family relationships.
