Tanga Cement Plc (TCCL) is a prominent Tanzanian cement manufacturer and a major player in the East African construction industry, best known as the producer of the “Simba” brand of cement. Founded by the Tanzanian government in 1980 and officially inaugurated by President Julius Nyerere in 1981, the company was later privatized and listed on the Dar es Salaam Stock Exchange (DSE: TCCL) in 2002. Tanga Cement is now primarily owned by global building materials giant Heidelberg Materials, through its subsidiary Scancem International DA, which has fortified the company’s position in the regional market. Located approximately 15 kilometers from Tanga city center, the company operates a state-of the-art facility with an annual production capacity exceeding 1.25 million tonnes of cement and clinker, utilizing high-quality limestone reserves found directly at the plant site. Tanga Cement produces a specialized range of products—including Simba Bora (42.5N) for high-strength work, Simba Imara (32.5R) as an all-purpose solution, and Simba Barabara (32.5N) for road projects—all manufactured to high international and East African standards (ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certified). The company has played a pivotal role in the nation’s development, with its products used in a majority of Tanzania’s road infrastructure and various large-scale civil engineering projects. Tanga Cement also emphasizes sustainability, with ongoing initiatives in carbon reduction, responsible quarry rehabilitation, and significant community engagement, such as co sponsoring the annual Kilimanjaro Marathon.
