Tanganyika Instant Coffee Public Limited Company, commonly known as TANICA Plc, is a historical cornerstone of East and Central Africa’s industrial landscape. Established on September 30, 1963, in Bukoba, Tanzania, it is the region’s oldest instant coffee factory, with production commencing in 1967. The company was initially managed by international firms Lyons and Nestlé before transitioning to local management in the 1980s. For much of its history, TANICA was state-owned until its privatization in 2004. Today, the majority shareholders are the local smallholder coffee farmers in the Kagera Region, primarily through the Kagera Cooperative Union (KCU 1990) and Karagwe District Cooperative Union (KDCU), together with the Tanzania Federation of Cooperatives. This ownership structure ensures that the company’s success directly benefits the local farming communities. TANICA’s core business involves producing pure spray-dried instant coffee powder using coffee beans sourced from these local farmers, water from Lake Victoria, and primarily original 1960s-era machinery. The company produces various products, including Tanica Café instant coffee, Kilimanjaro instant coffee, roasted beans, ground coffee, and Tanica Water (bottled spring water)
