Air Tanzania Company Limited (ATCL), the state owned flag carrier of the United Republic of Tanzania, has undergone a significant transformation under its ongoing five-year corporate turnaround plan for 2022/23 to 2026/27. Established in 1977 following the dissolution of East African Airways, the airline has transitioned from a period of restructuring to aggressive expansion. As of 2025, ATCL operates as a modern, competitive carrier from its primary hub at Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR) in Dar es Salaam. The airline’s growth is driven by a young and diverse fleet of 16 aircraft, including three Boeing 787 8 Dreamliners for long-haul routes, four Airbus A220 300s, and two Boeing 737 MAX 9s for regional connectivity. The fleet also includes five Dash 8-Q400s and one Q300 for domestic operations, along with a dedicated Boeing 767-300F freighter to support the nation’s cargo needs. In 2025, under the leadership of Managing Director Eng. Peter Ulanga, the airline expanded its domestic reach with new routes to Iringa and Mtwara, while reinforcing its international presence with services to Dubai, Mumbai, Guangzhou, and Johannesburg.
