The Girls First Initiative (GFI), formerly known as Msichana Kwanza, is a Tanzanian non-governmental organization dedicated to the holistic empowerment of adolescent girls and young women. Established to dismantle systemic barriers such as poverty, gender based violence, and lack of education, GFI operates on the belief that when a girl is prioritized, the entire community benefits. By 2026, the organization has solidified its role as a leader in “girl-centered design,” ensuring that young women are not just beneficiaries of aid but active participants in shaping their own futures. The cornerstone of GFI’s impact is the Taa ya Maisha (The Light of Life) program. This innovative model addresses the root causes of school dropouts by supporting both the girl and her caregiver. While girls receive scholarships and academic mentorship, their mothers or female guardians are provided with vocational training and microloans. This intergenerational approach ensures that the household’s economic stability increases, reducing the likelihood that a girl will be forced into early marriage or child labor. To date, this program has empowered hundreds of families, fostering a culture where female education is viewed as a long-term investment rather than a financial burden.
