The Tanzania Rural and Urban Roads Agency (TARURA) is a vital government authority established under the Ministry of State in the President’s Office for Regional Administration and Local Government (PO-RALG). Officially launched in July 2017, its primary mandate is to manage, develop, and maintain the vast network of rural and urban roads across Tanzania. Before its creation, local government authorities struggled with fragmented road management. TARURA unified these efforts, taking charge of over 100,000 kilometers of roads to improve connectivity and stimulate economic growth in both marginalized villages and bustling townships. The agency plays a transformative role in driving socio-economic development across the country. By upgrading earth roads to gravel and tarmac standards, TARURA facilitates the smooth transport of agricultural goods from rural farms to urban market centers. It also improves public access to essential social services, such as healthcare facilities, schools, and administrative centers. To foster long-term sustainability, the agency prioritizes innovative and cost-effective construction technologies, including the use of local materials and labor-based methods that create employment opportunities for community members. Despite significant funding gaps and the challenges posed by extreme weather events like heavy rainfall, TARURA continues to expand its reach. The agency relies on the National Road Fund and government allocations to execute its routine maintenance, bridge construction, and rehabilitation projects. Through strategic planning and transparent community engagement, TARURA remains a cornerstone in achieving Tanzania’s national development goals and improving everyday mobility.
