The Commission for Human Rights and Good Governance (CHRAGG) is an independent Government department established as a national institution serving as the focal point for promoting and protecting human rights and good governance in Tanzania. CHRAGG was established under Article 129(1) of the Constitution of the United Republic of Tanzania of 1977, as amended by Act No. 3 of 2000.
​The Commission commenced operations on July 1, 2001, following the coming into force of the Commission for Human Rights and Good Governance Act, Cap. 391, and Government Notice No. 311 of June 8, 2001. The Commission was officially launched on March 15, 2002, after its Commissioners were appointed and sworn in by the President of the United Republic of Tanzania. In Tanzania Zanzibar, the Commission officially began its operations on April 30, 2007, after the CHRAGG Act, Cap. 391, was ratified by the House of Representatives through Act No. 12 (Extension Act) of 2003. CHRAGG provides its services across all 26 regions of Mainland Tanzania and five (5) regions of Zanzibar through its headquarters located in Dodoma and Unguja, as well as through its branch offices located in Dar es Salaam, Mwanza, Mtwara, Tabora, and Pemba. ​CHRAGG continues to make efforts to bring its services closer to the public by opening more branch offices across the country.
