The Dar es Salaam Maritime Institute (DMI) is a premier higher learning institution in Tanzania specializing in maritime education, training, research, and consultancy. Operating under the Ministry of Transport, the institute is officially recognized as the Centre of Excellence for Maritime Education and Training in East Africa. Strategically located along Sokoine Drive in the heart of Dar es Salaam, it stands directly opposite the Nyerere Tower, overlooking the busy harbour area. The roots of the institute date back to July 1978, when it originally began as the Dar es Salaam Maritime Training Unit (DMTU) to train seafarers for the Tanzania Coastal Shipping Line. It was later established in its current form through an Act of Parliament in 1991 to meet the broader demands of the regional shipping industry. DMI is accredited by the National Council for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (NACTVET) and the Tanzania Shipping Agencies Corporation (TASAC), ensuring its programs comply with international International Maritime Organization (IMO) standards. Today, DMI offers a wide array of programs ranging from certificates to Master’s degrees. These include specialized fields such as Marine Engineering, Nautical Science, Naval Architecture, and Shipping and Logistics Management. Equipped with modern laboratories and advanced marine simulators, the institute prepares highly competent graduates who drive development in the regional blue economy.
