The Ifakara Health Institute (IHI) is a premier, home grown African health research organization headquartered in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Originally founded in 1956 by Swiss zoologist Rudolf Geigy as a field laboratory in rural Morogoro, the institute has evolved into an independent, non-profit Tanzanian trust. Over its nearly seven decade history, it has expanded its operational footprint to key branches in Ifakara and Bagamoyo. The organization operates under a mandate encompassing three core pillars: scientific research, clinical training, and professional public services. Administratively, the institute divides its cutting edge operations across three specialized research departments. The Environmental Health and Ecological Sciences department focuses primarily on vector control and mosquito ecology. Meanwhile, the Interventions and Clinical Trials department manages rigorous human trials for crucial drugs and vaccines. Lastly, the Health Systems, Impact Evaluation and Policy department translates field evidence into actionable national health guidelines.
