The Tanzania Railway Corporation (TRC) is a state owned enterprise responsible for developing, maintaining, and operating the rail infrastructure of Tanzania. Established under the Rail Act of 2017 following the dissolution of the previous holding company, TRC manages two distinct railway networks. The primary network is the historic meter-gauge railway, which links the economic hub of Dar es Salaam with central and western regions, terminating at Kigoma and Mwanza. This infrastructure has historically served as a critical corridor for both domestic cargo transit and landlocked neighboring countries. In recent years, TRC has undertaken a massive modernization drive, headlined by the construction of the electric Standard Gauge Railway (SGR). Running parallel to the old meter-gauge line, the SGR utilizes advanced electric locomotives to dramatically reduce travel times and increase cargo capacity. The first phase, connecting Dar es Salaam to Morogoro and Dodoma, successfully commenced commercial passenger services in 2024. This upgrade represents one of the largest infrastructure investments in East Africa, aiming to transform Tanzania into a regional transport hub. Beyond domestic connectivity, TRC plays a vital geopolitical role by facilitating international trade. By moving heavy freight off roadways and onto eco-friendly electric trains, the corporation lowers logistical costs and reduces carbon emissions.
