The Weights and Measures Agency (WMA) in Tanzania is a semi-autonomous government body operating under the Ministry of Industry and Trade. Established in 2002 under the Executive Agencies Act (Cap 245), it replaced the old Weights and Measures Bureau. The agency operates to improve public service delivery and enforce strict legal metrological control across the nation. Its primary mandate is to protect consumers and ensure fair trade transactions by controlling all measuring systems. The WMA enforces compliance with the Weights and Measures Act (Cap 340). To do this, officers regularly conduct the calibration, verification, and re-verification of all commercial measuring instruments. Their oversight spans diverse economic sectors, including verify petrol pumps at fuel stations, testing counter scales in retail markets, and certifying large vehicle tank scales at major transport hubs like the Mwanza Calibration Bay. By standardizing measurement metrics, the WMA aligns Tanzania with national and international metrology standards. It collaborates with higher learning institutions like the College of Business Education (CBE) to train professionals in metrology and standardization. Ultimately, the agency protects citizens from short-measurement fraud, builds regional business confidence, and secures the country’s economic integrity.
