The Cashewnut Board of Tanzania (CBT) is a corporate regulatory body established under the Ministry of Agriculture. Headquartered in the southern port city of Mtwara, the board is legally empowered by the Cashewnut Industry Act No. 18 of 2009. Its primary mandate is to guide, promote, and regulate the development of the country’s cashew industry. The CBT manages the entire value chain, ensuring quality control, licensing buyers and exporters, and stabilizing farm-gate prices through a mandatory online auction system operated via the Tanzania Mercantile Exchange (TMX).Driven by strategic government policy reforms, the board provides fully subsidized inputs to smallholder farmers to systematically increase national output. Under its current management roadmap, the CBT has cleaned up the national farmer registry database to streamline resource allocation. It is actively targeting an ambitious production milestone of one million tonnes of raw cashew nuts by 2030.Furthermore, the board is spearheading major industrial reforms to pivot Tanzania away from raw nut exportation. By initiating specialized processing industrial zones—such as the massive project in Maranje—the Cashewnut Board of Tanzania aims to enforce 100 percent local processing of kernels by 2030. This shift ensures greater economic value retention, safeguards agricultural contracts, and creates sustainable domestic opportunities for local youth and women.
