The Community Wildlife Management Areas Consortium (CWMAC) is an essential apex body operating in Tanzania. Known in Swahili as Muungano wa Jumuiya za Hifadhi ya Wanyamapori Tanzania, the civil society organization was officially registered in January 2010. It serves as a vital umbrella organization representing all community-based Authorized Associations (AAs) that manage Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs) across the country.The primary mission of CWMAC is to amplify the voices of rural community wildlife managers and their village-level constituents. For decades, local communities on village lands bordering state-protected parks faced wildlife conflicts without receiving direct dividends. By uniting these diverse community areas under one national banner, CWMAC provides a unified platform to share best practices, resolve land and boundary disputes, and push for equitable revenue distribution from photographic tourism and sustainable hunting. Furthermore, CWMAC plays a key role in institutional capacity building and environmental governance. It coordinates directly with international partners like Maliasili and the Honeyguide Foundation to deliver specialized training programs. These efforts help village game scouts secure better gear, update local management constitutions, and implement transparent financial toolkits. This institutional strengthening transforms underfunded rural lands into investment-ready eco-enterprises.Ultimately, CWMAC acts as a critical link connecting local Tanzanian communities with private green investors, international development networks, and state bodies. By driving landscape-level conservation planning and fostering cross-border learning exchanges, CWMAC successfully proves that wildlife conservation can thrive. It ensures that the preservation of natural heritage is directly tied to improving the tangible socio-economic welfare and livelihoods of rural Tanzanians.
