The Tanga Urban Water Supply and Sanitation Authority (TANGAUWASA) is a prominent public utility institution in Tanzania. Established in July 1998, it operates as an autonomous entity under the Ministry of Water. The body is regulated by the Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority (EWURA) under the Water Supply and Sanitation Act No. 5 of 2019. Headquartered in Tanga City, its core mandate is to provide sufficient, clean, and safe water services alongside reliable environmental sanitation systems.Initially tasked with serving only Tanga City, TANGAUWASA expanded its operational footprint in September 2019 following a government directive. The authority now manages water and sewerage infrastructure across Tanga City, Muheza Town, and Pangani Town. It successfully caters to over 93% of the regional population for water delivery. In addition to pipeline distribution, the authority manages centralized wastewater collection networks and coordinates cesspit emptying services to protect public health and the local ecosystem. TANGAUWASA is highly regarded as one of the best-performing water utilities in Tanzania. It holds an ISO 9001:2015 certification for quality management, which highlights its commitment to international standards and customer-focused operations. The utility consistently receives clean financial audit reports from the Controller and Auditor General (CAG), underscoring its institutional integrity and operational excellence. To sustain its growth and modernise infrastructure, the authority made history by issuing East Africa’s first sub-national Water Infrastructure Green Bond. The TZS 53.12 billion bond actively funds the expansion of water treatment plants, pipeline networks, and prepaid water meter installations. Through digital innovations like the MajiOAP online portal, TANGAUWASA continues to streamline its service delivery, ensuring that “Every Drop Counts” for the socio-economic development of the Tanga region.
