The Tanzania Public Bar Association (TPBA), known in Swahili as Chama cha Mawakili wa Serikali Tanzania, is the official professional body representing lawyers in the public sector. Established under Section 16A(4) of The Office of the Attorney General (Discharge of Duties) Act, Cap 268, the TPBA was officially created via Government Notice No. 589 on August 16, 2019, and formally officiated on September 29, 2022. It serves as a statutory platform specifically for State Attorneys, Law Officers, and public service legal practitioners to collaborate and address unique legal challenges. The primary mandate of the association is to enhance the efficiency of Tanzania’s legal system by promoting legal professionalism and accountability within government institutions. Membership primarily comprises public sector lawyers registered in the Office of the Attorney General Management Information System (OAG-MIS), alongside recognized associate and honorary members. Headquartered in the government capital of Dodoma, the association functions as an active hub providing continuing legal education, networking opportunities, and policy deliberations. Guided by core values such as integrity, professionalism, confidentiality, and teamwork, the TPBA plays a crucial role in safeguarding public interest. The association is steered by an elected leadership, which recently saw Wakili Bavoo Junusi elected as President in April 2025, succeeding former President Amedeus Shayo. By unifying public practitioners, the Tanzania Public Bar Association (TPBA) continually elevates the standard of legal services delivered to the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania.
