The Media Council of Tanzania (MCT) is an independent, voluntary, and non-statutory regulatory body established to oversee the country’s media industry. Founded in 1995 by media practitioners themselves, the council emerged as a proactive response to the threat of state-controlled regulation. Its primary mission is to promote and maintain freedom of the media in Tanzania while ensuring the highest professional standards and accountability. By operating outside of direct government control, the MCT provides a neutral platform where journalists, media owners, and the public can address grievances without resorting to costly and polarizing legal battles. At the core of the council’s operations is its arbitration function, which handles public complaints against the media.
